I am planning to install Windows XP on my laptop.....yeah, I know, "welcome to the 21st century". To be on the safeside, I backed up my files and put them in the C:\ drive. When I completely install XP, will my backup files be in the C:\ drive still?

I recommend you to use a 3rd party software like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. I prefer True Image because it works faster both while backing up data and while restoring it. Learn more about True Image here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

The files will be there only if you create a new partition in the drive for the xp install.

some backup progs has a feature to create a special hidden partition where you can store you backup files. and easily access them throug some sort of boot manager, for example acronis true image. also you can write backup files to any storage device you like: external drive, CD, DVD, etc.

A true backup is not maintained on C:
Backups are stored on CD/RWs, flashdrives, or external hard drives.

If you work on c: and save on c:, then keep backups on c: - you have no backup in the event of a crash.
