Is orange juice bad for kidney stones. I'm a mountain Dew drinker and I have a 1cm kidney stone that has to be surgically removed in Feb. I can drink my Dew all day long and have minimual pain but when I drink orange juice I notice a big difference in the pain. Why would this be?

the stone is in the UPJ of my ureter . which cause constant flank pain. They are going to do lithotrispy but insurance won't cover until Feb.(this is a new policy and it was preexcisting).

Orange juice often has calcium added (marketing more than any nutrition concerns really). Excessive calcium intake can make kidney stones worse.
Mountain dew isn't good for you either but it doesn't have any calcium. The caffeine may give you a buzz which distracts from your pain as well.

Try finding fruit juices without added calcium.

I'm so sorry about the surgery. Some scientists believe that the composition of the stone is nutritionally influenced.Others don't. Why do you have chronic flank pain? Was lithotrypsy not an option? Avoid the juice and drink lots of water. Some believe cranberry juice really helps avoid urinary tract and kidney problems. I hope to hear from you and wish better health this year.
