DirectX is an interface for provide Sound, video and I/O transfer between user and games or media software. DirectX is works as an link between game or media Player and I/O devices like Sound, video and keyboard or mice. It works when a software asks for use of a device then it takes the request and sends it to device driver, if soundcard or other device is supported by game then it works fine.(im taking the eg of soundcard but it works for all i/o devices). But in condition where soundcard not supports game and their sound effect, in that condition DirectX comes in life and converts the game's advance requirements details into default or normal details that supported by device.
U can think it as bunch of pipeline that provide resources to applications and user.
