i have know idea why some cats do that my cat started to drink right out of the bathroom sink tap, and almost no matter who uses the bathroom she trys to get to that dam tap. And now one of the other cats started to do that, but they still drink out of the dish.
Heres something to try find a cheap little water fountain or constant water drip safe for the cat and see if that helps.

Cats are like that. They like to mess with your head. Here is how to mess with his head. Keep putting the cups of water out but take up the dish for a while. Each day move the cups a few feet away. Do this until the cups are in a whole different part of the flat or house or whatever you live in. Then one day take up all the cups and put his dish of water back down where it always was. But don't let him see you do it! That will blow his little feline mind, and make him appreciate his water.

Our cat does the same thing. It's normal. Some will, some won't. It also may be something that they find interesting. Maybe out of boredom or just adventurous.
Think about it like this, do you only drink water from one location and one location only? Most likely not. Cats are no different. In the wild they drink when they are thirsty and when it's available. They don't only go back to one location. Ours will actually sit and wait by the bathroom sink sometimes waiting for us to fill the basin with a bit of water.
Just make sure that you try not to leave old glasses of liquids or plates of food out. If they sit a while then bacteria starts to develop and it may cause problems. Keep his water dish clean and filled like normal and just enjoy his little 'games' he plays.

One reason for this may be the material the dish is made of.
Is it a plastic or other type of porous/absorbant material? Do you wash it with dish soap or another detergent?
If it is a plastic/porous bowl, it will retain the scent/taste of the soap better than a glass/other non-porous material will that will turn kitty off from the water in that particular dish. Try going to a stainless steel or other type of material that can be washed without retaining scent/smell. Or, if you wash the bowl, do so with just lukewarm water and no cleaning agent.

that's a touch unusual i recognize, yet some cats the picture of water. I truly have a cat who likes to leap in the bathe with me. He showers off and then jumps out and licks himself dry. attempt putting the water and nutrition dishes on lineoleum the position you gained't have the mold project. If she is a kitten she will likely improve out of it. If she is an grownup, you've to get a water dish it truly is shallow and huge so she will't spill it. good success!

Maybe it's the material the water dish is made of. Maybe it puts out a strange odor that he doesn't like. I figure if he's drinking water, it doesn't really matter where it came from as long as it fresh and clean.

Haha that is funny! It may just be that he doesn't like the dish. I work with dogs and cats alot and some animals are just wierd about it. Some don't like metal or just want to eat off of a plate.

Yes..it's normal. I don't know the reason but I have had several cats that prefer drinking out of my bedside water cup for some reason.

my cat does this too. he will drink out of the sink and toilet. he will wait till we are out of the shower, and lick up the water on the tub.....your kitty may not like the bowl you have chosen for him. maybe try getting one that's a totally diff. color than the one you have now. as long as kitty is drinking then it's all good!
So just make sure you ALWAYS flush and don't use toilet cleaners that stay in the bowl part

My cat does this too. If she sees me heading to the restroom she literally runs me over to wait at the bathtub for fresh running water. She also likes to drink from paper cups and will bring it to me on occasion if she wants more.
Cats are kinda strange.
Who says dogs are smarter? :)
