Unfortuantely, the apt im living in has its restrictions so I cant have a fairly large dog. I want a dog with a sweet disposition, loving, and yet playful. I know I cant be too picky but Id like a semi gaurd dog. Afterall, Im looking for a forever companion here. What do you think would be the perfect pet?

If you want to own a dog, you've got to think in terms of what's best for the dog. For example, if you want to have a "medium-sized" dog, you need to make the time to take the dog to a park or field where it can run and run. Depending on the particular breed, you may need to do that more than once per day.
Not only is the breed important, but the "personality" of the individual dog is also critical.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm might be helpful: it's an online questionnaire that might help narrow down your choices, but you need to answer the questions as honestly as possible.
Good luck!

Well, a Pekingese is 10 to 14 pounds and is of an agressive nature. He may not be able to protect you all that well but don't tell him that. He thinks he's a lion. The well bred ones are sweet and love to play but you have to be careful to get one from a reputable breeder.
A Welch Corgi also comes to mind although I am not sure just how protective he will be. You could check him out on the American Kennel Club web site and maybe find some other breed you might like.

In my opinion, a Bichon Frise would be perfect. It fits the description. as long as you have the time to devote to grooming and training. Please do this, though. The Bichon is subject to allergies and some hereditary problems, so research the breeders in the area. Do not buy from a pet store, as 99.9% of these puppies come from puppy mills with no reguard for health, just a greed for money. If considering a Bichon, check out the BFCA's web site at www.bichon.org. There is a lot of information on breeders and the breeed. We own 2 of them, and will never own a different breed.

Most apartments require that pets be under 20 lbs. I'd go to this site: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/apartment.htm
They provide a list of dogs that are suited to apartment life. Then research the various breeds and find out which are suited to your way of life (exercise requirements, health issues, personality traits, etc).
Good luck and enjoy your puppy...oh...and any dog barking on the other side of the door is an awesome guard dog.

I think a Boxer would be a good dog for you. Loving, playful, great with children, energetic and intelligent. They can also be excellent guard dogs. For information on Boxers go to http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/boxer.htm
For a list of dogs that are also very good guard dogs go to http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/guarddogs.htm . It might be hard to find a small/medium sized guard dog as many dogs that are known guard dogs, are generally fairly large.

Go to a shelter and talk to the adoption counselor. They will always try to steer you in the right direction. You might be surprised at what you fall in love with, and what is appropriate for an apartment.

Hmm if you consider bichons and dachshunds to be small, i would really suggest rescuing a boxer. they are great small space dogs. but they definitely require some sort of daily activity. There are really alot of choices, and dog books can really help. maybe if you post something a little more descriptive we can help further.

Please adopt from your local animal shelter. I promise that the dog will know that you saved its life and will be forever grateful. Now,,what are you waiting for? Your new best friend is waiting for YOU ;O)
Most dogs are naturally protective of their home & family.
