Blu-ray is a new High Definition standard set by Sony and couple of other manufacturers.

There is also HD-DVD which is the competition to Blu-ray.

Blu-ray is not going away anytime soon (Needless to what anybody says about it). Playstation 3 actually has a blu-ray drive built in it and the system is close to $600. Most stand alone blu-ray players today are about $800.

You can not play blu-ray disks on your normal DVD drive. You can play normal DVD's on a blu-ray drive it is backwards compatible.

If you are planning on buying a blu-ray player do your kids a favor and spring for a Playstation 3. You will save $200 compared to normal blu-ray players and you will keep them happy by letting them play games on the most advanced game system ever built to date.

It is a special disc developed for high definition video. You have to have a player capable of playing it. Right now only Blu-Ray players can play Blu-Ray discs, and they cost about $500. Of course the Playstation 3 has one built in.

A Blu-Ray burner for computers has also been developed as well as blank media. The single layer versions currently out hold about 25Gb of data.
