Was born English speaking and never learned any other languages fluently until I married my French wife. I now speak French fairly well and can say that it is one of the great accomplishments of my life. To choose between Italian and French is a very difficult choice; I hope some day you can learn both! Why not?
I can tell you that learning French was fascinating. When learning the language I learned a lot about the history of the language and the nation. Did you know that English has a lot in common with French? When people say that English is a Latin and Germanic cross language, we often think that the Latin influence came from the Romans or something, but in fact Latin came to English primarily from the French! In fact 85% of our vocabulary in English comes from French. This happened when England was a French Norman colony for 350 years.
Yes the grammar and accents are different in French than in English, but once you learn the accents, pick up some basic grammar, and learn some new vocabulary, you can speak the language! It is like speaking a strange English (or more concisely English is a strange version of French).
French is not going to die. That's ridiculous! Yes it is less prominent as a world language than it used to be, but at least it is a world language. With all due respect to Italian it isn't a world language. But it is a beautiful language as well.
I think learning Italian world be more foreign than learning French.

Of those two choices, French would be the better as it's used far more world over than Italian.
Having a basis in French and English assists with learning other languages as well.
I'm sure if you googled learn to speak French, you will get tons of sites, but I'm not too sure how effective online learning of a language would be, as you need to be immersed in it to learn it correctly.

I don't think it's a question of " easier " .
Italian is easier . But French is a useful language for work & travel . For example : most Africa speak French ,etc.

Personally, I would prefer French, I've been learning French for the past year, It's been quite challenging though...
In French there are "Mots Cles" which are the spelt the same with English words with as well with the same meaning. So that kinda helps.
Try buying a " French for Dummies" help book, I have a copy and it's great! =)

if you know already spanish, italian will seem to you easier: italian and spanish are very similar except they make plural in different ways, french is a little bit more different but it is more wide spread then italian, italian is spoken only into the italian republic, swiss and not ufficially all around the world where italians have arrived.
I could suggest you italian, but I'm not independent.
To study it, use italian satellite television.

I think French. Keep the English as its all one needs. But I think the French might go farther than learning Italian.

Depends what you want to learn them for. If you want to learn for traveling, then learn the one for where you want to travel to. I think that italian might be easier than French, mostly because of all the accent mark and such, but if you're good with language both shouldn't be a problem.
