it may be a one off occurance of the beginning of something serious like arrhythmia or atrial fibrillation. Monitor it, note dates, times and what you were doing and if it continues, see a doctor

Yes! Definitely see a doctor. You might have an electrolyte imbalance that's causing the irregularity or feeling of palpitations. You might also have something seriously wrong with the "wiring" of your heart.

Or... since you say this has been happening at night... you might have a problem with acid reflux. I have GERD (acid reflux) and if I'm having a flare up of it, it naturally gets worse when I lay down. And that in turn sometimes gives me heart palpitations. I did some research on this, and it turns out that an acid reflux flare up can irritate the vagus nerve, a large/long nerve that is nearby the esophagus. So the nerve mistakenly tells the heart to do these extra and/or irreglar beats. It apparently is harmless and self-limiting, but it sure is annoying and nervous-making.

But no matter what you think is the reason for your own palpitations, please see a doctor first!! Good luck!

How old are you? did you have excess caffeine or alcohol or stress lately? If you are older it could be A-fib. If not, it is probably the former...If it doesn't go away with time and it becomes a bother, then go to the doctor

I would have to say yes. But you need to think about other things to tell your doctor.

How do you know that there are extra beats?

If there is some type of arhythmia then there should be some more symtoms.

Lightheaded, sudden adrenlein rush, what are you doing when this occuers?

Another 2 cnets

It is your body's reaction. You must have done something wrong to your body so that is why you heartbeats are increasing. You should go and see a doctor and tell him/her your problem frankly. Tell the doctor everything you are facing so that the doctor can help you.

- Good Luck - :)

Yes. You may have an irregular heartbeat which may need to be corrected with a pacemaker. You should see your doctor ASAP.

irregular heartbeats usually indicate serious problems. you should definitely see your doctor, if you suspect your heart is skipping beats, since s/he will be the only one who can tell you if there is something wrong
