You should look at the total cost of ownership; not just the gas price. After all, if you have to spend more on maintenance but spend less on gas, how does that help you. I don't know if it is going to paste this here properly but I did a cost comparison for all of the vehicles you mention, plus the Civic Hybrid. The 5 year cost to own for all of them, in Chicago, averaged about $29,500. The low was the Mazda 3 at $29,394 and the high was the Corolla at $29,806. That is a difference of less than $100 per year over 5 years. The choice really is which one you like better. The new Civic is HOT! The Civic and Corolla, in my opinion, are a cut above in quality. Mazda has never managed to step up to that next level although they make VERY good cars. Maintenance costs on a Mazda can sometimes be higher also.

Best of luck to you. I am pasting the results below, but I am not sure you will be able to make sense of them. Yahoo! Autos allows you to compare cost of ownership of up to 4 cars, side by side.

Overall they're pieces of crap. I had an 06 and the transmission had problems from day 1, and the dealership claimed they couldn't find anything wrong. After about 15,543 miles the transmission got to the point where it would grind going into 3rd, and it got to be almost impossible to get into reverse. At this point I called the dealership again and complained about the problem, and finally got them to look at the car, which by this time all the syncros in the tranny were shot, and come to find out there was a few parts missing from the transmission from the factory. They had my car a month, and after about 3 weeks finally got it put back together only to find that there was now no reverse. So back to square one again. This time they tore it down again and found more parts to be missing. After that fiasco was completed and I got my POS car back I drove it for another month and it was almost as bad, minus the grinding. There was a couple times that at a stop the car wouldn't engage into any gear, and to fix that I had to turn off the car, place it into gear, and then start the car again. During the time I had the cobalt I averaged 32mpg which was mainly highway miles. It had plenty of power, but it helped by having the manual transmission. They're a complete waste of money, and I see that GM has upped the price on them, and still have the same POS car. So as a result I will never own any vehicle from GM. Personally I would look at a Toyota Camry, Corolla, a Honda civic, or accord. Anything but a POS GM vehicle. I now own a 2008 Toyota Tundra, and I've not had a problem with it.

They all get about the same, I am sure they have the same size gas tank as well. They are actually the same type of car.... so just chose the one you like.
