2007-01-13 15:10:29 · update #1

2007-01-13 15:11:31 · update #2

obviously it was not the same cross. The fact the thieves names were witheld, seems rather strange. I mean this is a very important part of history.

Two Thieves

You do not need the names of the Thieves to be saved

Two criminals. They say that they were thieves but, there is also speculation that they were zealots trying to force the Romans to leave by causing an uprising. I think the reason behind this thought is because that was what was expected of the Messiah when he came was he was supposed to lead the Israelites into a rebellion against the Romans and be their great General like guy and become another King like David. That's basically all the Jewish people could think about was conquering the Romans (it's interesting that that's just what the Christian Church did was conquer Rome) but, anyway I always tell people be very careful when you are just wearing a cross and not a crucifix because there were two other crosses on Calvary and only one represented salvation. Makes sure you are not venerating the cross that represented condemnation.

The same cross? No one. There were 2 thieves, one crucified on each side of Jesus Christ, as recorded in the New Testament Gospels and as prophecied in the Old Testament. The names of the thieves are also not recorded. Barrabas was freed instead of Jesus because the Jews demanded it. Read the Gospels for more information on this and for a better understanding
Note: The names of the thieves were not mentioned because they were not major or important parts of the story at hand; Jesus Christ is the central theme here

Barabas went free cuz the Jewish leaders wanted Jesus dead and they didn't care what they had to do to get that done. It was their tradition to let a prisoner go at the celebration of the passover. Therefore, Barabas was set free.

Why would the names of the theives be so important? It's not like they were high profile criminals and popular among the people (Barabas was a known murderer). They were common theives.

No one...Jesus had his own cross! lol, sorry, I couldn't resist!
Anyways, there were two robbers on the side of him!
And why they let Barabas free was because the people (the audience Pontuis Pilate was asking) wanted Barabas to be set free!

There is no names for the two thieves. Every year they can let someone go free. The Pharisees wanted Jesus dead. They chose Barabbas to let go, and got the crowd to yell crucify Jesus.
Jesus allowed Himself to die on the cross for all.

I did. I know it is very hard to understand how anyone can be placed on a cross 2000 years ago. Actually all who have placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ, have been nailed to that cross with Jesus Christ. In Galatians Paul is speaking for himself. In Chapter 2 and verse 20 he says "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me, and gave Himself for me."

The Bible does not give the name of the two thieves on each side of Jesus. Barabbas went free. The people chose him when Pilate gave them a choice between him or Jesus. But it was in the plan of God one man would be set free. We all went free when Jesus took our sins upon Himself, if we accept Jesus death as payment for our sins.

Two common thieves did. One, heard the truth at the end of his life, and accepted it, and asked for forgiveness. The other one rejected Jesus.
As for Barabbas, it was the custom, that on the (I think) Sabbath, to pick one criminal that was to die, and give him pardon, for whatever reason. This choice was given to the people, to either let Jesus go, or Barabbas. The crowd was in an angry mob type mode, and to the leaderships surprise, they chose Jesus over Barabbas to still be crucified. It was not because he was innocent that he was let go.

According to tradition, it was two thieves named Dismas and Gestas. But this is just a fiction. As is the Barabbas story. Bible scholars have concluded that the missing first name of Barabbas was JESUS, but it was deleted from the text because it bothered people that they had the same name. But what does Barabbas mean? bar = "son of " "abba" = father. So he was "Jesus, son of the Father"! Now we see a glimpse of the "Historic Jesus" that the scholars have long looked for but never find. It was Barabbas!
