I'm pretty good at approaching women in bars, where it is expected. But, it's harder in places like coffee shops or grocery stores, where women aren't expecting to be approached. Any tips, or good icebreakers for those two situations? I guess it's also harder because we are both sober and those are quiter locations where others are likely to listen in. I just need a few good tips. How would you want a guy to approach you or talk to you in a coffee shop or store, that would be different from what you would expect in a bar?

I should mention that I never find women I want to date in bars, so I want to try other locations. I'm in my mid-20's and working on a PhD in psychology. I was in a long relationship and have really only been trying the bars since that ended.

Coffee shop: "Hi, do you know what's good here?" Friendly, yet not overbearing.

Grocery store: "Hi, I saw you had _________ in your cart/buggy, and I was wondering how you liked it?" Laundry soap is a good one, but nothing "intimate" like condoms or pads.

Good luck...Oh and:

And please, check for a ring. I despise getting hit on when my wedding ring is actually HUGE! It fits like finger armor and covers all but the last joint. So, if she has a ring on, think again.

If at a coffee shop, just go up to her and ask to sit with her or comment on something of hers (ie a book if she's reading, or something else small like that). Commenting is a great conversation starter. Grocery stores are kind of awkward, but approaching someone is do-able, you just need to be creative about it.

Good luck!

in a coffee shop or sumthing like that i would expect the guy to check my hand a few times to make sure im not married. if a pretty lady needs help then help her and it may end up helping you spark a conversation. don't be afraid to loo a little stupid sometimes by doing things like saying a pickup line to a woman you see [ex. if you were a potty, you'd be a porta hottie... well ok maybe not one that strange, but you know what i mean] dont worry cus most likely you'll never see the woman again if you dont end up getting a date. put urself out there and dont be scared... women like men who aren't afraid to look stupid for them. good luck!!!

In a grocery store, if you see a woman that you want to talk to, ask for her help finding something or how to cook something. This really gets a conversation going and you actually can learn a lot about a person real fast this way. This will tell you if she can cook, the types of food she likes, etc. Lots to talk about. Give it a shot!
