If you have an open floor plan and want to paint the kitchen and living room different colors, how do you transition from one color to the other? Is there just a line on the wall where one color stops and the other begins?

Both colors are earth tones - one is a light peach, the other is a yellowish cream color

Either use a natural dividing line or create one. A natural dividing line may be where the cabinets stop or the flooring changes or even where the lighting changes. If these, or others, are not readily apparent, creat one by putting a flat wood trim strip vertically on the wall and paint it with a color which will act as a blending area for the colors on each side. The wood strips I have used are 1/4" or less thick and about 1" to 1 1/4" wide. Its not much but it will suggest a transition from one area to another.

there is no real way to do it. it would look kind of bad if you did it with a line. so i would recommend painting the far wall in the kitchen one color and the rest the living room color. make sure they both fit together well and pull that kitchen color into the kitchen and the living room as well. good luckk =]

Have to see the floor plan, but ..yes , a corner or a color that is similar or enhances your other color in the transition, usually darker or lighter. earth tones are the easiest for this.

it can be entirely up to you...what ever you happen to like. (don'tcha just hate that kind of answer?)
i've been painting 35+years and have only broken up a wall like that a few times...it is not a common thing to do, though it is done, and it does look good, so don't be afraid to do it.
