What is one of the most common mistakes new users of Linux make? It is improperly burning iso images. Just burning the file on a cdr media as a data file does not properly set up the disk or make the disk bootable (which is what you want to do). Do not simply burn the iso as a data cd. You must burn it as an iso image.

In order to properly burn an iso image, you must instruct your burning software to use the "burn image" function. Also, make sure to burn all the images that you downloaded this way. For example, in Nero, you go to the main file menu and just choose the "burn image" option.

Another, less often seen mistake is to extract the iso files to a hard drive, or extract the image to a directory using a utility like isobuster, then attempt to burn the directories and files to a cdr disk. This will not work. Also, just putting the iso files on a hard drive does not make them bootable or usable.

Do not use Windows XP to burn your images. The XP utility only burns a data disk, which is not what you want.

Make sure that you have the bios set correctly to boot the cd drive before the hard drive. Many systems do not do this by default. The system may seem to check the CDROM drive, but not seek the drive for a boot image. The order can be floppy, cdrom, then hdd0, or in older systems (if you have two choices) cdrom, then hdd0. Make sure to save your changes and have the cd disk in the drive when the system re-boots.

When we don't understad the details of the task, and it fails, some of us become frustrated and cuss.

That doesn't solve anything, and drives off the helpers who were gathering to see if they could help.

I am a Linux Advocate, since 1997, having run and built and repaired computer systems since 1965 in the Air Force (20 years). and out in the world, for corporations, since.

Here are my checklist items:
1. When the Image is downloaded, it must be burned to CDrom and NOT imaged again, in what ever burning program you prefer, like Ahead Nero, Roxio, or something else. MAKE SURE that you "Burn Image to CD"

2. After 6 downloads, would think you have a good Downloaded file. But, the MD5SUM is a number from an algorythim that assures no data error.

3. Ubuntu.org would actually send to you the full DVD or CDroms of the distro you choose, FREE!

4. Most Linux Users Groups hold Installfests. At these we usually give out distros, or our proven copies of them. There are 310 LiveCDrom distros (http://livecdlist.com ).

Linux Users groups are listed at http://lugww.counter.li.org

Normally, "Non-System Disk Error" means theres a floppy stuck in The A drive. I have installed Ubuntu, and other distro flavors of Linux uncountable times. A couple of thoughts here;

1 Ensure BIOS is set to boot from the CD Drive, Before the Harddirve

2 You are burning this as a bootable .iso file, right?
I use Iso Maker to burn my .iso's as Nero seems to give varied results. Actually, This program is about the easiest iso burning program to use. Just right click on your download, and choose "Copy Image to CD", and Iso Maker does the work for you; Iso Maker is Freeware, and available here (works fine within XP)
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/ISO_Recorder/ISORecorder.html

3 If you are using other software to burn an iso image, make sure and burn it at the lowest possible speed and verify the image after burning, if the option is available.

4 Make sure you are downloading from the official repository;
http://ubuntu-releases.cs.umn.edu//6.06/

5 Make sure you selected the right architecture, with a Celeron, processor you want to make sure and select the"x86" image.

6 Download 6.06 and NOT 6.10 as their are stability issues with 6.10 (6.10 is suggested for experienced users,as a kind of testing platform for the next stable release. 6.06, is the current STABLE release)

If none of this does it for you, feel free to send me an email, & I will help you further. Try not to get frustrated, You will love Ubuntu once you get past installation. : )

If you are in no hurry, order the disks....they are free. Otherwise, the others have good advice.

The other thing that I have found is that I had to burn my image @ 4X....some older PC's may not be able to read a high speed disk.....4X works in almost all cases.
