He looks a lot like my kitty! She also has a weight problem -- supposedly they are very common in ginger tabby cats like ours.
It's probably a good idea to limit the cat's food intake as well as get him on a regulated feeding schedule, like every morning before you leave the house.

It seems a lot of the people who post answers here don't know much about cats.
That cat doesn't look overweight at all. You can't rely on weight to tell if a cat is overweight or not. For example, it's completely normal for a Maine Coon or Ragdoll to be 20 lbs or more. Even some mixed breed cats can even be 25 lbs and be completely healthy and mostly muscle.
Your cat just looks like a big, tall, muscular cat. With normal weight. Unless the photo is concealing a bulging belly.
Did the vet tell you he was overweight?

My initial reaction was to tell you your mother wasn't doing anything good for your cat but after looking at his picture I can't say he looks overweight. He's a beautiful content looking animal. Some cats have heavier skeletons than others, so the weight doesn't necessarily indicate fat. If you aren't sure about the amount he is eating check out the label on a can of cat food. It will give you some guidelines. If you are worried however, and your mother doesn't want to cut down on his food, you might think about what you can do to make sure he gets exercise. Keeping throwing those toy mice and running around with him. It will probably do both of you some good.

I've had 4 cats now, and only one weighed about 25lbs. That was because he was as large as a beagle. The cat in that photo does NOT look like it weighs 27lbs. The only way I could believe that weight is in that sitting position the top of his head to the floor measures 18". If that's the case 27lbs is NORMAL for a cat that freaking tall. My cat was that huge.

As a former vet assistant ive seen many things so heres my advice. There are a couple of ways to handle this. First you can get him a low fat dietary cat food. Eukenuba is the best however you will be paying for the name as well. You can STOP his intake table scraps which will help dramaticly. Limit his intake of food i.e feed him once a day a half a cup. Ask your vet also if theres anything else you can do.

27 lbs. for a domestic cat is obese. His life expectancy will not be favorable at this weight. Their are much healthier foods than "fancy feast." Iams would be a good choice. Oh, by the way, you might want to remove the plastic from the lamp-shade.

He's cute. He doesn't look like he weighs 27lbs. If you want to put your cat on a diet that is not starving the cat but feeding him very well. Go to your vet and get Prescription Diet cat food, RD(reduced diet). I put my dog on a diet because he weighed 115lbs and he lost 37lbs. The formula is designed to keep the dog full so he eats less because he doesn't need or want as much food. He won't be starving at all. Try it it worked great for me.

Canned food is more fattening than dry food for cats. The liquid will retain in the cat's body longer. Try giving the cat dry food with a little wet food, but put him on an overweight formula in the dry food. Try science diet.

Well, if he is becoming less mobile then it is nearing animal cruelty to not do something about it, cause it is decreasing his quality of life. Yes....27 pounds for a cat seems excessive. He will not live a long life at all at that weight. There are many weight management foods out there that cats love.

Hey, my Tika is 20 pounds...and she does not eat all that much. And she's quite healthy and happy. But there are 'weight management' dry foods on the market that some cats actually like.
