When ever my mom yells at me, or me and my brother fight, or something he gets in their face and growls, and threatens to bite them, he raises all the hair on his back and gets between whoever it is, and me and wont let them move untill i okay it, or reassure him. i have had dobes all my life and i know thats what they are bred for but, i have never had one who was this protective of me. i mean its a good thing sometimes, like when i was at the petstore and a man kept following me, and finally just grabbed me when i was trying to hide, thank god i had hammer, or i dont know what would have happend. but in the end the man had 62 stiches, and was arrested. but i dont know, any ideas whta i could do to reduce the over protetion of me?

Dobermans are guard dogs and they will protect what they are supposed to. The dog is just trying to keep you safe, not much that you can do about it. the only suggestion is try and get your family members closer in relations with the dog.

You are in a very dangerous situation Christina...I'm not familiar with your country's dog laws but i guess the owner will be held criminally responsible for any harm done to other party, regardless...i used to own Doberman dogs, well trained and very protective but on my command only.
When you get into yelling matches with your mom or fight with your brother if your dog behaves in the manner you mentioned then reassure your dog that it's all fine.
I guess what you can do without me getting into many details is to stage play fights (attacks etc,etc with a member of your family or friend and each time he growls YOU should scold him verbally with short sharp commands and when he does obey you then you should reward him with a pat and something that he enjoys like a biscuit or something. In no time he will realize who's the Boss.
You can also do the same as above in a reverse manner....attack only on your command.
Take your dog out to socialize with people and other dogs...don't let him become obsessive of you.I hope it helps.
Keep me posted for any improvements
Cheers

Well, obviously that characteristic your dog has is good, because of the incident at the pet store, but that could also happen to an innocent person, so you should be careful he doesn't attack anyone he is unfamiliar with. My dog does the same thing, when someone would fight my dog would bark and try to bite until we stopped. I guess its just in the nature of the dog.

I hope I helped, and good luck with your dog!

while it's good to have a dog that will protect you so well. the aggression over simple things is not good. your dog is very in tune to you and when you are nervous and upset he's going to act this way. great for when you are in danger, but bad if it were someone of your family or even a child. you need to see professional help for your dog to rezone him. a behaviorist that specializes in dog aggression will be able to help him understand that it is not acceptable to become aggressive when he senses you are upset or nervous. and i doubt you will be able to stop him from doing this when you are in actual danger, so i wouldn't worry there. but talk to the trainer about your worries and they should be able to give you a plan of action. be consistant with the training and your dog will learn when it's acceptable to guard you and when it's not. you may even want to train him to guard and protect only on command so you know you have control over his actions as best you can. good luck.

All of my dobies have been like that. Very protective. You must make sure that you have complete control of your dog at all times.

Take the dog to obedience school...Make sure he knows that you are in charge.
