The programs don't allow for people to use their own dogs. Problems tend to occur because the dog is already familiar with the home environment and will not alert you to something new or out of order. The programs have their own puppy farms where from an early stage the puppies are being trained to respond to certain things.

It's the same for Hearing Dogs also.

Excellent question. what a pleasant change :-)

Seeing eyes dog are trained from puppy hood. there was a program on animal Planet a few years back called Cell Dogs. Inmates had to be pre qualified in advance of being approved for a puppy. The pup lived with the inmate for 24/7 and each pup was stated off with basic obedience. After graduating from basic obedience obedience, the pup and the inmate went on learn other basics. Some of the prisons did strictly
seeing eye dog training while others did a assistance types of training such as turning on a light switch , letting the person know a hone was a ringing, closing a door, or whatever purpose the dog was going to be used for. It was quite interesting, but I remember on prison in particular that I believe was in the
Carolinas that did specifically seeing eye dog training and the dogs they turned out were fantastic. Of course, it took several years of training, but the prisoners weren't doing anywhere .

It was really interesting to watch the bond that developed between these dogs the inmates and the inmates felt that they were finally giving back to society and doing something useful.

It was kind of sad when the dog finally went to the prospective owner because you would never believe the bonds that the prisoners had developed with the dogs. It was hard to believe that a convicted criminal would break down in tears as I saw happen quite often.

Rowan University in New Jersey has a program that allows students to train service dogs. If you are interested, it may be a less-expensive way to pursue this. Good luck with your pooch!

They do need to be trained from puppyhood, as they are raised and socialized differently than an ordinary companion dog.

the guide dog centers that I have known, even breed their own lineage, as they are chosen for exceptional health, intelligence and trainability.

However, hearing ear dogs, seizure detection dogs, search and rescue, and bomb/drug sniffing dogs are usually trained as adults..Many of them recycled from shelters.

Justine, Kirsten's answer seems super. i might purely upload - is your niece a member of any on line blind communities? She ought to ask a query there and that i'm particular human beings might tell her which airlines they have had good and undesirable studies with, and/or share particular suggestion for the airline she chooses. I went to a talk board for those with mobility themes as quickly as we had to fly with my daughter on crutches, and it replaced into relatively effective - i did no longer even ought to ask the question in view that they had multiple pinned threads with the type of advice i mandatory. (surely the airline and airport have been super too. i wish your niece has a in addition good journey.)
