I applied by person at a service center in Calgary for my passport. The day I submitted my application was Jan. 3 and at that time there was no communication to me about delays or any reason why I should not have my passport in time. I am booked for a trip Feb. 3 and was told by a service agent the only way to guarantee I get my passport at a decent time would be to pick it up rather then having it mailed. So I paid the extra fee. Now, as of Jan. 9 the government of Canada website is saying that there is a sharp increase of volume and that there are 5 to 20 day delays on passports. I submitted my application a week before this notice was presented to the public. Even though I paid to have my passport in Calgary at a certain date for pick-up, should I ALSO be expecting delays even though that was not originally communicated to me at the time of application? And what is considered an "emergency" which will allow me to get it in 24 hrs? I have proof of travel.

Pretty stressful isn't it? I am about to apply, just glad I can mail mine in and don't have to line up. But that means I wait longer too. I am just glad I don't need it right away. I waited as my passport was about to expire but I had a flight to the US. I felt more comfortable bringing my about to expire passport instead of applying early for a replacement. I have 3 separate friends all talking about spring vacations, at least one of them is likely to come through and I want to be prepared.

Boy, do they have us trained. We can mail it to you, but for an extra $10 fee we will let you pick it up! lol

Yes, you should expect a delay, but probably about 5 working days. They typically state a 10 working day time-frame they were dealing with from January 3. So, that is still 3 or 4 weeks and I figure it is 90% chance you should have it on time. The 20 day delays are going to be on applications they have problems with, or if any little thing was missing. So as long as yours was the average run of the mill applications you should be fine. And having said that, you might even get a break and it will be early. Your application should be finished before the ones behind it, and with the backlog they could hurry it through.

The one bit of bad news that I have heard about is emergency. No - that you have booked a flight and don't have a passport is not an emergency. If you are stuck abroad and lost your passport, or you have a mother dying in a foreign country and need to go or a child missing in a third world country and need to go - those are passport emergencies.

Good luck.
