stay at a hostel in queens brooklyn harlem the bronx jersey city hoboken or newark. midtown or downtown manhattan will be expensive, the suburbs MIGHT have cheaper hotels but the commuter rails are about 3-5 times as expensive as the path trains and the subway and don't run as often.
