Okay, I don't know how it is where you are but in Hawaii most of the housing sucks. There are E-8s living in the same quadplex as E-2s. I thought privatizaion would make the housing better but they are just taking advantage. Soldiers are paying anywhere from approximately $1600 to $2600 BAH for the SAME quarters.
To add insult to injury, most of the housing here is so old and beat up it's pathetic. Nothing like coming to HI and living in a project.

Trust me, I am not disappointed just because we are in Hawaii. This housing is the worst we have ever seen, anywhere!

It would be nice to get what you pay for. More families are going to be going off post for housing at this rate.
Another thing-- I don't want to live next to some 18-19 year olds that party all the time.

Most of it is old, except on the posts where it is brand new.

I have found in my experience that if you live off post you tend to find houses at a lower cost than paying BAH for living on post. My husband and I are about to go to Ft Lewis Washington and there is a wait for approz. 6 months to get housing so we are being forced to live off post. I find this to be a little bit better because BAH up there is about $1,100 and i am finding real nice apartments for about $500-$700. When i was in missouri at ft leonard wood, i was givin a choice of my home i saw many run down house and some very nice houses I decided on a so-so house because of the area. This is probably why you see some lower enlisted living near higher ranking. If I choose a nice house but in a part of the base where it seemed to be more troublesome i would choose a so-so house because that is where i would want to see my children raised. I dont care who i live next to major or a pvt as long as there is no problems it shouldnt matter. If you are having trouble with "teens" partying then call the MP's they will shut it down.

I was luck never to have to live in the military projects. I did have to share a room with more junior enlisted than suppose to in Bangor Washington because of room.
What it sounds like is that they are charging each soldier the current rate of BAH for that soldier's level. An E-2 is allocated less for housing than an E-8 so like section 8 housing and other governmental housing programs you pay as much as you can afford and the government pays for the remainder.
At Fort Sill, there was a housing project that was falling down and they finally built new housing to move these soldiers to safer housing. I think that they will tear down the old housing and build new there to.

so sorry to hear that, we was at base housing [navy] in Florida and whilst not bad certainly NOT great..........I am not sure who's bright idea it was for this privatization BUT OMG what a mess it will be here in Florida.....for instance they are going to move the front gate back so ONLY the officers housing is on the inside and sub let any open billets to people that will be paying what they can afford.............which is going to so NOT work, you will have open housing where you could be paying $1400.00 for your house and next door with umpteen kids will be paying $100.00 [as that is what they can afford] but then what happens when you house is broken into and hubby is at sea for 6 months etc.....just a huge can of worms that's going to get worse I am sad to say, am just pretty glad that hubby has just retired and we have bought our own home, at least we could pick where we lived.
Take care and enjoy Hawaii all the same.

I hate to tell you but E2s and E8's have always been paying differently for the same sets of quarters.. Housing just wasnt privatized.. You didnt get BAH, it just went back to the Gvt... KWIM? The thing about housing is if you dont like it, you can always move off post. Privatization will eventually make things nice, but it takes time and money...

Housing is only nice if you are in the navy out here. I'm not sure about the mariens or air force. I live in army housing. Wow I was shocked when they showed us are home. Not just enlisted live here the officers do too. If I was getting 2600 for housing I wouldn't be living here in base housing.

My brother is a Major in the U.S. Army and he lives on post at Ft. Knox, KY. (right now he is deployed to Iraq) his house was built in 1950. Some of the people who live by him are lower enlisted, which is really strange. He just had to take what he was offered. He has a wife and 3 kids and they have a 3 bd. 2 bath house. I can defintely see where you are coming from. When you think of Hawaii you think, everything is just beautiful. Welcome to the U.S. military.

A lot of it depends on what base you live on. Some bases are lucky to have nice homes while others not so lucky. If there is something wrong with your house it can be fixed. If it's really bad they might start remodling base housing.

PPV sucks .period. WORST idea the military ever came up with. we are slowly seeing our benefits being eroded. here, we have civilians..regular ones, NOT DoD civilians, paying a flat rate for base housing.. while they charge us nearly a thousand dollars MORE for the same floor plans.

Heaven forbid the upper echelon should have to live in proximity to the rabble of the lower enlisted ranks. Perhaps the point is to encourage the more experienced spouses of higher ranking soldiers/sailors to help out the uninitiated spouses of the lower ranks.
You all sound very snobby to me.
