My dog needs an operation, she's torn her cruciate ligament (her knee) and is limping and in pain. She means the world to me and I need to get it done ASAP - it tears my heart out to see her in pain. The operation will cost around $500 plus boarding fees for a few days. How can I save money within a short amount of time (i.e. a month at worst), while still paying bills and debts off?!

Please don't reply if you hate dogs or are going to be negative about spending a large sum on a dog.

I am genuine and I hope those who answer this are too.

First check to see if your vet will allow you to pay this off in monthly installments.
Then, check with all the local rescue groups and see if they have any free emergency surgery assistance funds. This money does not need to be paid back, but most people will eventually pay it back in a few years when they are in a better situation. I know the group I volunteer for will give a person a 50.00 voucher for the vet of the owner's choice should they meet the criteria. There is more than one group in our area and we encourage asking as many groups as they can. We all want your pup to feel better as soon as possible!
Also, if you have free dogsitting help (room mate), work as many hours as you can to get a few exta dollars. Even 50.00 more a week adds up to the 500.00 paid back in 10 weeks...
Then there is the obvious, no going out, no junk food, no dvd rentals, etc. cut out all extra driving so you don't have to buy as much gas, no trips to Starbucks, yadda yadda.
Good Luck and I hope your pup heals well ! you're a great owner!-Blessings-dd

I know what you mean- I am a poor college student and needed to dish out $700 for cancer removal on my horse's eye. What I did: worked a ton of extra hours. Some vets have payment plans- they may want 50% down, but will let you pay so much a month after that.
A really good option if available in your area is Care credit. It has good interest rates and a 0% interest for 6 months if the bill is over $500 or something like that. It can only be used in hospital care for both human and veterinary.

I am sorry about your dog's injury.I understand how stressed you must be.Try contacting your local SPCA or Humane society. Some cities and towns have it set up that operations can be done for less or nothing depending on a person's income. They don't want your dog to be in pain either.Give them a call and see what they can offer.Or talk to the vet, they are sometimes understanding and will let you put some money down and make payments for the rest.

Could you give and honor post dated checks?
Alot of Vets will take post dated checks.
During the time you are scraping together the money,if you quit going out to eat for a month or so you would be surprised to the amount of money you could save to put towards your post dated checks.
Look at all of the ways you could cut corners in your life to save money.
Look around your house and see what you could sell in a garage sale.
Do whatever you can as you would for a child.

Good Luck

I would try to put it on a credit card, or talk to your vet about paying some upfront and being invoiced for the rest in about a month. See if they can work something out with you. I feel your pain and I would do anything, try to sell some stuff on eBay if you have anything, or maybe ask if your employer can give you an advance. Good luck!

Check with your vet to see if they have a monthly payment plan.
You can get a short term loan on your car or other personal property. If all else fails ...take a second job. How about a huge
garage sale..everybody has stuff they don't need that 's worth something.

Groceries can cost a fortune. Maybe cut down what you need and what is JUNK. That'll help with some money. I'm so sorry about your dog. Maybe raise money?? Sell stuff? Good luck.

I have 2 siberian huskies 1 malamute 3 cats and 1 kangeroo, and i would do anything to get them fixed. Maybe you could ask the vet if you could pay off the bill, or shop around for a vet that will. or beg or borrow the money. I wish you luck!!

most vets won't require full payment with an emergency. Most will set up payment arrangements or at worst, require to hold your dog there while you pay. Good luck, and try to find a vet that does this!

ask the vet doing the surgery if they except carecredit. If they do, you can apply online at www.carecredit.com.
If they don't, maybe they have another type of payment plan.
In the meantime, she should be on pain meds given by your vet and her activity should be restricted-leash only. No playing or running until surgery.
