I have dealt with this issue more then any others...

The following comes from liutilities.com

Description:
svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Note: svchost.exe is a process registered as a backdoor vulnerability which may be installed for malicious purposes by an attacker allowing access to your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. If unaccounted for, this process should be removed immediately.

Note: svchost.exe is a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

Note: svchost.exe is a process belonging to Microsoft Service Host Process. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Determining whether svchost.exe is a virus or a legitimate Windows process depends on the directory location it executes or runs from in WinTasks.

Now... that being said, you need to investigate and look further into where that process is listed for the directory and what it is doing.

Windows defender is a free utility that shows the processes and what directory they are listed to.

For example in my pc right now there is 7 svchost.exe processes running and they are all legit. They are running various services including WIA, DNS client, audio, RPCs, and many more services.

This same process can also turn your computer into bot by opening a backdoor into the system files. Check spyware, maleware, viruses, and other issues first before messing with system settings.

If you have the original system disks you will need to do a system restore. the svchost.exe file is a very important one for your computer to run, and if it's corrupted, you won't be able to do anything.

You should have an option to restore/repair the OS so you don't lose your data/files/programs that are installed.
If you can't do that, then make sure you have a back up of all our important data before doing a complete restore, because you WILL lose everything.

Svchost is an important part of your windows and can not be stopped since it manages everything your computer does.

However, since its such an important part and virus/trojan/spyware creators know this, they often name it the same way. You should run a virus/spyware check.

If you do not wish to wait for it to check, download the program (in the source) and check if the svchost which is running is located in C:\Windows\System32. If not, run a antivirus/antispyware immediately.

svchost could be any number of windows applications. Unfortunately, that's not enough information to troubleshoot. Based on the number of problems you are having, I would first suggest checking for viruses and spyware. If that doesn't solve it, reload Windows.

turn on your computer in 'safe mode'... then run 'msconfig'... look for the svchost program on the tab named 'startup'... if its there and the box is checked, uncheck it, then restart your computer

what you need to do is a complete re install of your system, that is of you Operating System only.

The problem occurs when the OS is corrupt.
