I haven't even burned them and the smell is overwhelming. And I hadn't planned on burning them; I just bought them because they go perfectly with a candle holder I'm using as a decorative accessory.

Sometimes a candle does not need to be lit (as you mentioned) to smell the aroma. I just suggest that you don't burn the candle. Or you can either buy smaller candles or not buy them at all..??

The offgas of candles can be ovewhelming. I am sensitie to this and must leave some stores that have strong scents.

You can try unwraping the candle and putting it in an open space (garage or patio) where it can release some of the smell and you won't be around. Charcoal or baking soda near it is also helpful to absorb the odor. The smell will diminish after a time.

I'd try burning them. The scent may not be as strong as you think from just smelling the candles, especially if they're burning in a large room.

Could you place the candle in a tall vase or container and burn them on a porch or patio? That way, you could still enjoy the scent, but it wouldn't be as overpowering.

I hear you. I am really sensitive too. I only buy the soy candles that are either lightly scented or I buy only unscented ones. If you have ones in your home that are too strong, place them outside for a week. The smell will reduce.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/3gKv0
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

coffee beans absorb smells. put coffee beans around your candle holder. Also you can use your vents or open a window.
