cats are very territorial.
my kittens do the same thing, as much as any other cat.
They see it as THEIR own place.
Instead of urinating every where else, they
were trained to go there.
So when yourr scooping it away, they'll hop back in and make sure that their territory is still marked.
Especially if there are other cats around.

My older cat will jump into to the box to use it while I'm actually in the act of scooping it. I'm forced to walk off for a few minutes and come back after he's done.

Lol, Linxii does the very similar aspect until eventually I stuck her in her service so i ought to sparkling it... She actual does not enable me sparkling her muddle container and ought to actual attempt to swipe the scooper so her poop at the same time as again in! notwithstanding, now that you requested this question, one in all the different answerer's gave me an theory. canines mark their heady scent by technique of peeing on issues, male cats mark their heady scent in the same way, per chance the cat is making an attempt to ascertain that the container is her territory and is afraid that in case you scoop her muddle out, that yet another cat will use it? My cat replaced into extra territorial when I had canines... who disgustingly ought to also eat her poop... as well that cats are truly curious, they are probable sitting there observing you questioning, what the heck does this human imagine they are doing with that? that is mine! lol, desire this facilitates.

Ever heard of 'curiosity killed the cat'?? Cats really are curious. One of my cats has watched me scoop out the box. One time he came up and stepped into the box and proceeded to pee. All I could was sit back and watch him do it. When he was done I just scooped out the new mess.

Cats bury their feces, instinctively, as a way to hide their scent from predators. When we clean out their box, I'm sure that they watch because of several reasons: 1. We are uncovering their scent; 2. It is their "marked" territory; 3. Curiosity.

My cat does this...waits for a clean box and then when I've removed the mess makes another one. I think she's glad to have the old stuff gone :)

Maybe she likes the sound it makes when you dig in the rocks. She might think you are hunting a bug or something and she better keep watch in case a bug comes out of the box.

My cats do this too. They fight to see who gets to poop first in the fresh box.
Let me ask you this question, do you like to use a fresh flushed toilet? If you do then it's the same thing as your cats. They like to use a fresh scooped box.

haha. My kitten does this, but she doesn't just watch, she wants to play. I have to lock her out of the room in order to clean the litter box so she doesn't make a mess. My my older kitty always uses it right after i clean it. So maybe she is amused, or maybe she is just waiting to use it when it is fresh.

I have never seen a cat that didn't like to watch his/her litter box being cleaned. Cats love clean litter. They all use that clean litter right away too.
