I teach Jr. high special ed. and I mentor some of our community's most at-risk students. I had one really tough "gang" kid a few years ago that I thought I had "lost". He was at my school a few months ago doing some grounds-keeping work through a work program that gives young adults job skills. He stopped in to see me and gave me a big hug. He said he was out of the gang, and was learning a trade and needed to thank me. He said I was the only person that had ever believed in him and now, every time he even thought about making a bad choice in his life he would see my face and turn himself around. He said the worst thing that could ever happen to him was if he ever let me down. I still cry when I think of him and hope I can do the same for some of the kids I have now.
