Take the length of the trip (round it up to 1200 miles to make the math easier) and divide by the miles per gallon that you get (20 MPG). 1200 divided by 20 = 60 gallons of fuel that you will need.
Take the amount of fuel and multiply by the cost per gallon.
60 gallons times $2.50 = $150.00
The size of your tank does not matter. With a smaller tank, you will have to stop and refuel more often.
You do not say where you are traveling. In some areas gas is more expensive than others. Make sure you have a bit of extra cash to provide a cushion. You do not want to run out of fuel and money before you reach your destination.
Also be aware that the map programs may differ from your actual travel mileage, as they do not allow for any detours, such as fuel stops and food / rest room breaks!
Have a safe trip.

The size of your gas tank makes no difference in this problem. Have you measured and verified 20 miles per gallon? Was that for highway or city or mixed conditions? What type of terrain? Assuming you have verified you do average 20 miles per gallon over many varried conditions, then it becomes a simple math problem, 1198 miles / 20 MPG * $2.50 = $119.80. If this is for a real trip, I would allow an additional 25% just to make sure I had enough for fluctuations in gas prices and hilly terrain where your mileage will decrease significantly.

First of all I would round that figure up to $3.00/gal to give you a cushion. So figure on 400 miles a tank, that would be 3 tanks of gas so $180 but you also want to make sure you have extra so I would throw in an extra $100 dollars at least just to be on the safe side- you never know when you will end up in a snow covered ditch.

If you plan to drive 1200 miles, you will divide 1200 by 20 miles (per gallon) and find that you will need 100 gallons of gas. If you are so lucky to find gasoline at $2.50 per gallon, you should anticipate needing at least $250 for your trip. It kind of depends on what part of the country you are travelling in.

you desire to have extra gasoline money than you go with so simplify the mathematics. call your mileage 20, call the cost of gasoline $3 and additionally you will choose approximately 10.5 gallons. i could plan for 20. Have an incredible holiday.
