Chemical engineers do lots of things. It's hard to say for sure what all of them are...I can only describe what my experiences have been.

I know when I was hired, I intereviewed at pharmaceutical companies, oil & gas companies, chemical companies, commercial product companies, and electronic companies. I ended up taking my first job as a plating process engineer at a connector company. I also could've been a plastics engineer at the same company working on connector moldings.

As a process engineer, you generally specify and order equipment, or maintain the current equipment and find better/faster/higher yielding ways of making product - whatever that product might be. You keep up documentation, you support factories overseas, you dabble in other areas such as waste treatment and product engineering as well.

I was a product engineer for a while trying to expand the product selection for another company I worked with.

I was a materials engineer working in a failure analysis lab.

Lately, I've been more working in the cleaning & contamination aspect of engineering. Many products are out there that must be cleaned before they can be used. An example is in the medical device industry...a friend of mine just started working in that industry at a local company.

There are just a few examples based on my own experiences...I'm sure there are many others.
