My favorite method for pet names is to wait and see what sort of personality traits come out in the pet and name him/her accordingly. This could take some time though but I have yet to have a pet that has gone more than a few days without a name. My last cat was named Possum because she liked to play possum like the Opossum, but when you weren't looking she'd pounce on your hand . She also like to attack feet.
