Adam should be viewed by us as a prototype in addition to being an individual. In Genesis 5:2 it reads " he created them male and female, blessed them, and called their name Adam..." So if we examine "Adam"as a symbolic figure it is a representation of both genders...and perhaps even a generational society, one which in this case had a history of over 900 years. We have to remember that the ancients used pictures to form ideas and communicate because they did not have an alphabet language, today we have an alphabet language that is used to form pictures with words... I think we call them metaphors or metaphoric language.

Genesis 4:17 says, "Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch." Who was his wife? It is implied in the biblical text that Cain married one of his sisters. Several facts lead us to this conclusion.
First, it is clear that Adam and Eve had a number of children. Genesis 5:4 says, "After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters." Since Adam and Eve were the first man and woman, and since God had commanded them (and their descendants) to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28), it seems reasonable to conclude that Cain married one of his many sisters. It is also possible that he married a niece or even a grandniece.
One must keep in mind that in the early years of the human race there were no genetic defects that had yet developed as a result of the fall of man. By the time of Abraham, God had not yet declared this kind of marriage to be contrary to His will (see Genesis 20:12). Laws governing incest apparently did not become enacted until the time of Moses (Lev 18:7-17; 20:11,12,14,17,20,21). Hence, there was no prohibition regarding marrying a sister (or niece or grandniece) in the days of Cain.

Three or so thoughts:
The 2nd creation story, Genesis 2 does not claim to be the exclusive domain of life. Life abounded all around. It is a symbolic story packed with meaning. As you know, Adam means humanity. Eve - mother of the living.
The Geneis story is a masterful sythesis of older documents. A primary example is the Ugaritic Gilgamesh Epic. This is from what is / was southern Mesopotamia - near Ur where Abram lived as a laddie.
When the Faith Bible begins, chapter 12 after the "Pedigree" Bible, Abram and Sara marry. Later he tells Pharaoh she is his sister! Oh no - incest? Lies? Hardly The Hurrians living w/ the people of Ur had grooms adopt the wife before marrying her. This gave her greater legal rights and a higher status in society.
FTR - scientists and historians are fairly certain, using the 4 rivers and other data, that Eden and yes the flood were "buried" under the delta by a seismic event in what they believe was the not to geologically speaking past.

"After he(Adam) begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; AND HE BEGAT SONS AND DAUGHTERS" -Genesis 5:4 Like it or not, Cain's wife was a relative -direct descendant- of Adam, as can be plainly seen in the aforementioned verse. Let's try for a really difficult and unique question, shall we? There's no Biblical evidence that Abel ever married before Cain murdered him

They didn't only have two. Cain and Abel are just mentioned first.

Gen 5:4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

WOW! How many kids could you have in 800 years? And that's just the ones AFTER Seth.

MANKIND ADHAM
……………………….
Most have read when Cain talked with Abel and in the field killed him.
Gen.4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
God then cursed and drove Cain out, and Cain said.
Gen.4:14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
WHO IS CAIN WORRIED ABOUT?
Gen.4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
WHERE DID CAIN FIND A WIFE?
The answer is in the Hebrew text of (Gen.1:26 and Gen.2:7).
……………………….
MANKIND
Gen.1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
The word “man” (Gen.1:26) in the Hebrew text looks like this ( אדם ), with no article means “MANKIND”, transliterated is (adam).
……………………….
ADHAM
Gen.2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
The word “man” (Gen.2:7) in the Hebrew text looks like this ……………… ( את־האדם ), with article and particle means “THIS SAME MAN ADHAM”, transliterated is (eth-Ha adham).
……………………….
On the sixth day God created or made MANKIND.
……………………….
On the eighth day God formed THIS SAME MAN ADHAM.

Gen. 4:14 NASB "...and it will come about that whoeverfinds me Willl kill me." now it did not say his parent wil kill him, so who do you think is going to do it???Hhhmmmm, maybe be brothers and sisters, cousins ect. Cain's story is written right after the fruit story because it is the first murder story.
