Because of all of the money that people spend breeding them. I just recently had a litter of French Bulldogs and I had $1500 invested just in vet bills the day that they were born. Bulldogs have to be artificially inseminated and then have to have c-sections to have the puppies. Also, it is hard to find healthy quality breeding stock. My female had 4 puppies (which is a good size for a Frenchie), so the do not have that many puppies.

Because it's difficult to reproduce them. Most of them must be bred by artificial insemination. (a cost) Most of them must be delivered by cesearian section. (a substantial cost) They don't have huge litters so the costs of production must be spread over a relatively few pups.

The female bulldog dies quite often giving birth and her litters are often very small...This causes their prices to go up!
