Why not adopt a dog from a rescue shelter or ASPCA? They make wonderful pets and you'll be doing a wonderful thing for a really good dog.

I am so sorry for you loss!!! My suggestion is to check out your local rescue groups, there is one for every breed you can think of, also check you local animal control, rescue groups they will have puppies as well as young and grown dogs, mutts,pure breeds etc. They need homes as well, they cost allot less and will love you just as much as a high price breeder dog. If you go to a shelter or rescue and you adopt, usually they have their shots needed and sometimes they are already fixed for you, if not they usually have a discounted spay/neuter certificate to give you, and maybe even micro-chipped depending on what state you live in. Good luck finding your new companion.

Try the pound first. Pound puppies make the best dogs in my opinion. a grown one would be nice as well.

Never buy a pet off the internet. However, petfinder.com will help you find a homeless animal in your area (or even out of your area!). They are hooked up to shelters all around the country.
Please get your animal from a shelter. These animals need love and homes.

adopt a mutt from your local humane society, the doggy will get a home and some hope and you'll get a wagging tail companion.
it's a win-win situation...
