Bottle water has contaminates in it - sooner or later they multiply to an unsafe amount for consumption . While some old age water maybe thrown out other bottles are used. I think retail stores leave them out - under the buyer be ware logic. For home use I would think old water is great for watering plants

The water is probably good for a while longer the FDA requires a best by or sell by date or an expiration date on all foods. That means what it says, and if it says expires it simply means they will not guarantee the freshness or quality of the product after that date. It's use at your own risk. Though we all know milk usually spoils on the date, almost all the time, water probably will be good after the date as long as it hasn't been opened.

It may be contaminated. Or it may not. But the company tests its bottles and caps to make sure that it will stay sealed and free from contamination until the expiration date.
Plastic does breakdown, and while it is possible that bacteria would enter the bottle, it is pretty unlikely. Then again, if the bottle is stored in extreme conditions - very hot, direct sunlight - it may go bad before the expiration date.
Also, a store isn't supposed to sell it after the exp date.
Basically, it is a CYA thing. If you open it AFTER the exp date and it is nasty and you complain to them, they can say, "well, we told you to drink it before the exp date"

I work in a supermarket. Yes almost all products need to have a best by date or use by date. best by dates don't have to by used before the date given, use by must be though. unless the water is opened it should be all right. even though shops can't sell after that date. shouldn't be much wrong with it....wouldn't want to risk it though if is been like over a year or what ever for the reason of bugs, bacteria etc.

If you stop to think about it, when does water truly expire? All the water on earth has been here since long before us, so perhaps this exp date is a marketing ploy to get you to buy more water.....

FDA requires expiration dates on all things consumed. Some things never really spoil, so they just put a date on themas far in the future as they are allowed to. Water is one of those products.

Thats because the plastic that the bottle is made out of breaks down after a while and contaminates the water.

I thought that was weird too I don't know why it says that. Maybe the bottle does something to the water.

I don't think anything happens, water as i recall water doesn't expire, but all food has to have a expiration date because the food and drug administration makes it a law to have one.
