We will probably be there for many many years. I agree that the lack of a strategic plan for rebuilding the government of Iraq after the invasion was a horrible thing. We are there now and we have to deal with it. Unless we are able to stabilize that country and keep our military there we will end up in a much larger conflict right around the time your son turns 18. If we leave, Iran will invade and the terrorists will have their own country and their own supply of oil. They can use this oil to fund terroristic operations around the globe and to strike directly at Israel, Europe, and the United States. An Iraq held hostage by Iran accompanied by Venezuela could cripple our economy by withholding oil. They could also put pressure on Saudi Arabia to withhold crude as well. The Saudi's don't have a strong military and we wouldn't be there to protect their government or oil. No one wants to face the facts that we need to protect our interests in the region. We need oil. We need to stop terrorism and the radical Islamists that will bring this terrorism to our doorstep. Our military has to be in the region. We need to be there for a long, long time.

yes.
best case scenario we will at least have advisors in many fields embedded for quite a long time until they reach total self sufficient sustainability. 10 years I dont think is quite long enough. Maybe right around that time our involvement will become insignificant as crutches change hands to privatized organizations and efforts.
reason to worry now:
sustainability in the face of attrition while embedding our forces deeper in a manner that will increase difficulty for phased withdrawal. there is a chance the draft might need to be implemented pretty soon to reach the new cap we will need to sustain the 20k+ more for this particular region. When and if indeed this becomes vastly apparent and our reserves are showing wear then it will most likely be democrats in office realizing the nearly undoable burden left to them. A fashion in which the only way is forward and through to completion would be a healthy change from our recent history in foreign affairs. This could be catastrophic politically for democrats to have to be left to deal with. An excellent move by current republicans for thier own laurels and chance to reclaim direction in 2012. But I really dislike all politicians anyways. I think the quality of the people we represent can be shown in our every day work, I believe in the mission and I believe the only way, just like everything else in life, is forward. This is not dependant on time, its upon thoroughness and constantly we will be adjusting to changes as they appear. This is why no one can forcast. A draft is something everyone fears. Trust me, no serviceman wants a draftee at his side.

You let your boyfriend call your son a pussy? That is NOT good. Your son has known you for longer, he is part of you, and you are being unfair by letting your boyfriend call him names. You need to d something to fix this situation, or your son will end up even more messed up. First of all, talk to your son and see how he feels about going into the Marines. He is his own person, and he needs to make this important decision on his own, without any outside force pushing him one way or another. Next, talk to your boyfriend and tell him that you and your son are a pair. He can't just have you and send your son off as soon as he can. If he is disrespectful to your son, that means he is being disrespectful to you. He needs to understand that if he is going to be let anywhere near your son. Poor boy.

Absolutely yes.

There may not be an ongoing war, but the U.S. will certainly have military bases inside of Iraq for many, many years to come. U.S. bases still exist in Germany, Japan, and Korea, so I thnk the answer is yes, there will be U.S. military personnel in Iraq ten years from now.

For all the liberals out there, if you think that we are going to pull out of Iraq in 2 years cause Bush is leaving office then you are crazy. Look at South Korea and the reasons why we have been there for 50+ years.

My father was 21 at the end of World War 2. That was 61 years ago. We're still in Japan, Germany and Italy.

My perspective on how the world looks over there, yes.

But hopefully a very strong democrat will get in as president in 08' and we will hit a good turn around.

Unlike Bush where he is asked by a reporter, "how do you feel the war is going mr. president?" He answers, "bad." The reporter asks, "can you be more descriptive?" Bush says, "the war in iraq is very bad."

Yeah... I think it's time for change. I am praying that we won't be there that long... but we can't just pull ourselves and leave that country in damnation.

If your Democrats don't push the draft you won't have to worry. Besides we'll probably be in a different war by then. They come every 10-15 yrs. Did you really think this would be the last one?

i should hope that we wont be there in 10 years, and i highly dougbt that this country is that weak, if we are at war with them in 10 years, then this country has only been going backwards
