I get these very cheap rate ads for Spirit Air, but have never seen a plane with that name on it, and I get around a bit. Have you taken one of their flights? Is it for real? What's the catch?

YES they are a real airline and a discount one at that. Their hub is in Detroit and recently have been expanding. The fare sales are set up so that unless you stay several weeks or a month you cant get a flight for the discount fare both ways. But I have booked 2 trips on them to Vegas from Atlanta which started non-stop service recently and my first trip was $157 round trip, $69 each way and the second I got ATL-LAS for $7.77 and a $69 return, so my flight in Feb is only $95 after fee's.

My first flight was miserable. It was completely booked and I was traveling with an infant. The ground power unit wasnt working and there was no air. Finally after sitting there for 45 minutes the captain came on and said they would try to start the engines to get air circulating. But, the aircraft needed an air start and the one they had was obviously broken and it would be 5-25 minutes before one would come. Finally a Flight Attendant opened the rear doors to circulate air. After another 20 minutes we finally got the air start and were on our way, an hour and 10 minutes late on New Years.

You only get 1 beverage service and all food is for purchase. The seats are very uncomfortable and the leg room is smaller than any Ive seen. Im 5'8'' and my knees were in the back of the seat in front of me. There is also no entertainment on the flights. So, you are getting what you pay for. Upgrades are cheap however and I suggest buying coach and ask for Spirit Plus when you check in hopeing it is still available. Usually its $50 depending on the city and anyone can upgrade, and they prefer you do it at the ticket counter.

The flight attendant while in the gate was called and she came to the row in front of me, "Yeah, what do you want?" and then someone wanted to switch seats because they were travelling with a child and she said "Oh for Chist's Sake!" and goes back and asks someone "Im not supposed to ask you this, but I dont really have a choice in the matter, but give up your seat for this lady so she can sit with her kid." I was in utter disbelief that any FA of any airline would talk this way. I worked for Delta and we worked their ticket counter and gates in Vegas and met many crew I was amazed at the experience I had on their flights.

My return wasnt as bad, but I bought a portable DVD player for the flight home, the crew was better, but I had the benefit of checking the seating situation because I still know everyone in Vegas.

Unfortunately for budget sake I have to use them when I can because flying from Atlanta to Vegas is often to take my daughter to see her father. If you have other options, I suggest using them, but if all you want to do is save some money, its a great savings if you bring everything with you. Seriously invest in a portable DVD player for the flights and bring your own snacks.

The deals are real and you can find them. Some days sell faster than others now that they are advertising as widely as they are to get their name out, but they are not a new airline, just new to some routes.

I fly them again in a few weeks and Im praying for a less crowded flight and definately bringing the DVD player. ALSO as of Feb 10th they are changing their baggage policy to only allow one checked bag per passenger for free. When I was working the ticket counter excess baggage was $250 each, so that may be changing as well, but I couldnt say for sure.

I've never flown them but I have heard of them.

Spirit Airlines is a United States low-cost airline operating nationwide scheduled and charter flights. The airline is headquartered in Miramar, Florida. About of a quarter of the airline's flights are to destinations in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Latin America.

Spirit is the worst! Their continued existence is a mockery of decent business practices and corporate social responsibility. It's time we do something about it!
