I would not say that braces generally hurt....it is more of a discomfort for a while...and then you forget what it feels like without braces! It will feel awkward eating, and sometimes the metal prongs of the braces can cause lots of mouth ulcers, the orthodontist can give you some wax to cover these problematic areas (however I found the wax to be useless as it just came off!)
The only time I found my braces to provide me any real discomfort was when a new wire was put on. It was more of a numbing feeling, but this only lasted a few hrs to a day each time. But you can always take some panadol if it is really troubling you!
You say your having braces for the summer?? As far as I am aware...people usually have braces for 1-2 years......
Braces arnt anything to be afraid of....yes they may not be the most attractive thing in the world........but I can tell you now..the complements you will recieve about your teeth following the removal of your braces will definately make up for it!!
Goodluck
(braces also means you have a good excuse to eat lots of ice-cream!!!)

When I went to get braces, I had to get some of my teeth pulled first and get x-rayed and yadda-yadda before they could put them on. It might be different for you. When you actually get them it'll take about an hour or so and the pain is annoying for a while during getting them on ya, and afterwards your whole teeth may feel like a really bad tooth ache for around 2 weeks, just chew a lot of sugarless gum and/or take medication to help soothe it. You'll prob have monthly appointments and most likely at each they'll tighten up your braces more and more (when you're going to your first few appointments it'll hurt a lot more than it does as time goes by) and the pain isn't really that bad as time goes on, it'll prob last up to a day or 3. What's good is they'll let you change your colors on your braces each appointment and you can pick 2 to make a pattern if ya want.
The orthodontist and his assistants will REALLY be on ya about brushing and doing as they say. They know when you're not doing what they instruct you to do (example: my orthodontist told me to wear rubberbands around my teeth nightly until my next appointment, he could tell when I hardly wore 'em). You'll really slow down the time he's estimated that you'll have your braces off if you don't follow his orders correctly.
Basically, it won't hurt much and the orthodonist will sometimes nag you, but in the end it's really all worth it for really straight beautiful teeth! : )

they hurt the first couple of days, and you may not each a lot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, cause your friends will be jealous that you lost a few pounds =) also the wires rub up against your cheeks, and you can use wax to make is softer, but i recommend letting it rub your cheeks, because after a while your cheeks toughen up and you don't need to use wax. if you use wax, then it'll be a few months till your cheeks toughen up, and wax is a pain! food gets stuck in them a lot, so i recommend spending the last 5 minutes of lunch silently picking at your teeth with your tongue (lol). also, rinse your mouth a lot, it will help get all that crap that has been building up. don't worry about what you can or can't eat, just be careful when eating the "forbiden" items. also, set aside time for brushing your teeth. usually what i do is spend 2-3 minutes in the morning brushing, then use mouth wash. and in the evening, floss (it takes a long time, usually like 5-10 minutes), use a christmas-tree brush, and finally brush. also, your orthodontist will give you flouride, which you brush your teeth with after your brush and rinse with toothpaste. this flouride stuff tastes good, and whitens you teeth! it's amazing stuff, so try to use it as much as possible (not more than once a day though. if you have not stopped reading by this point, then you will know everything there is to know about braces =) good luck, and don't be ashamed to smile!

When I got mine, they hurt for the first few days. Use the wax for the first week as the braces might cut your cheeks until your mouth gets used to them. I have to agree with Jim C - think about the end result.

its not that you have to get braces, its more like you get to have braces. your lucky! my parents could not afford them when i was young, and i never did myself. now at 52 i got a mouth full of expensive work i have to do just to save my crooked teeth. 3 or 4 years out of a life time is nothing. good luck.
