Dynamat, or an equivalent sound dampener, is what most enthusiasts will recommend. I lined my trunk with Dynamat, and have no more rattling sounds coming from my trunk. You can either line the trunk lid, which will stop some rattling, or the whole trunk to stop the maximum amount of rattling(recommended). Keep in mind that you pay a pretty penny for it, but it's definitely worth it to have clean sound compared to the rattle box in the next lane. You'll have awesome clarity without the rattling.

You will most definitely need Dynomat or another brand made to do the same job. I had a cavalier with a big system in the back and once it was loaded with Dynomat the rattles went down big time. ALSO it might be more than just your trunk lid rattling, I would take it to a professional install place(not a future shop or best buy for crying out loud), go to a REAL install place that only does Stereos and alarms and get them to rattle proof your car, they know the tricks of the trade and will have your car nice and quiet in no time.......

GET DYNAMAT!!! Or get some other sound deadening material. Not only will it quiet down your rattling trunk, but if installed correctly, it will acually make the bass louder. Just adding a trunk kit and the door kits will actually make it sound like you have bought a bigger amp or more subs.

What kind of car is it in? 84 Buick or 2007 M3? Dynamat or similar material will help. Its most likely a weatherstrip problem. Your trunk is rattling due to old weatherstripping. It doesnt seal they same way when it was new. So there is a gap that allows the vibration/rattle. Change the weatherstrip.

You need sound proofing...namely dynamat. Most likley you will also need to do your back door panels and trunk. Dynamat is not cheap. It comes in different thickness for the door panels.
Another item you can use is the sprayon sound proofing. The only problem is it stinks for awhile until it cures. It is basically a rubber/tar like spray similar to under coating used to queit road noise
