Assuming youre BIOS is set correctly, Either youre cd, ide controller or cd-rom is bad. I recommend replacing this cd-rom first since it tends to be the easiest. There is no reason is should not boot from cd is it is set correctly in the BIOS and the drive is actually reading the cd.

Put in the XP CD
Open "my Computer"
Right click on the CD-drive
select "autoplay"

that should start the XP installation process

First of all just put in a readable disc into the drive to make sure the drive is functioning. Put the xp disc in while you are logged on and open the disc if it doesn't automatically. You can usaully do this, and if that doesn't work you might want to go to CMD (command prompt) and type help then reformat, but that is somewhat confusing.

real. you could set the boot order of your pc contained in the BIOS settings, which could often be reached with information from urgent the 'del' key for the period of startup. you could set to boot off CD/DVD-ROM, HDD, removablechronic, or Flopychronic.
