Sometimes you wish the bible was more direct. There are two and only two tables. You can read the verses yourself.
Exodus 15:12 says God gave Moses tablets of stone and the law and the instruction.
Exodus 31:18 states there are two tablets.
Exodus 32:15 again states there are two tablets.
Exodus 32:19 Moses breaks the two tablets.
Exodus 34:6 Two new tablets are created exactly like the first
Exodus 34:4 Again two tablets.
Answer: There were only two tablets. See verses for details.
One minor point: Exodus 24:12 used the word law which means all 613 commandments, not just 10.

There is only ten commandments. The first two tablets were broken, becasue of the wickedness of Moses's people, when he returned he came back with what we now know as the ten commandments.
I honestly don't know what bible you read from if you think there were three tablets, in the beginning, before Moses went back up to get the ten commadments. The only reason for the ten commandments was because Moses had seen that his people were not ready for the commandments written on the frist two so he broke them, then returned with the ten commandments which are like the first, were two, five for each tablet.
Jeez.

I don't remember anything about a third tablet, but I do remember something about Moses being so upset at what was happening, when he returned with the tablet(s) --something about idol worship and golden calf worship?? he smashed the tablet(s), don't know how we got the new ones, but have always thought that if everyone could follow those ten commandments enough to figure out the what 11th commandment is (unwritten but tentatively proposed) that hopefully someday there will be...WORLD PEACE.

That was in a Movie "History of the World Part 1" which was a comedy. There is nothing in a Bible about a 3rd tablet. Moses did break the 2 he came down from the mountain with when he saw the Hebrews worshipping the golden calf though.

Exodus 32:15
Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back.
Exodus 32:19
When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.
Exodus 34:1
The LORD said to Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.

It's not true. It's obvious someone made that up to create another fable or story. There were only two tablets that God wrote His 10 commandments on.
Exodus 32:15, 16 - And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. 16 - And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

Before Moses, went up the mountain the Israelites said 'whatever the Lord God commands us to do, we can do.' When Moses came down he saw them worshiping another god already (a gold bull). So Moses broke the two tablets he had (in anger I think - only person to break all 10 commandments at once he he). So he went back up and got another set.

Hello =)
That must be the oldest, most pervading urban legend on the planet....wow, 5000 years, and still going strong. I've not heard that one in eons......LOL
I guess it's time for it to resurface, however....
No, it's not true...LOL
Moses smashed the tablets in anger, and had to rewrite the whole thing, but since there were only 10, I don't think it was much of a problem........
If you carve something in stone, you tend to remember the wording, I think.....
I think that was the first recorded instance of a first class "hissy fit", however..... He broke the commandments, melted the Golden Cow, and made his brother Aaron drink the molten Gold, which, no doubt killed him on the spot. I doubt that anyone messed with Moses after that, and he became the world's first psychotic dictator......Claiming to know the mind of God, although, I guess in his case, he was accurate...LOL
Thank you baseball Grrl for quoting the Bible in English...it is a refreshing change from the "tongues".. of King James.......
Namaste,
--Tom
