I have a small male lhasa opso. He has always had really bad eye boogers (for lack of a better term). He has them clumped on the fur about a 1/2 inch under his eye. I always see him pawing at them and i try to get them out with a tissue but they are too embeded in his fur and he hates when i try to get rid of them. I need to snip the clump off but he hates siscors and i am afraid i might nip him or something. i plan on taking him to the groomer tomorrow but is there anyway to prevent this problem or take care of it at home?

yeah! me too. but like people { take notice to how many times you wipe your eye] a dog can get dust in their eyes and the tear ducts washes this dirty dust out and it does get clumped. but you use a clean soft cloth, paper towel and warm water to wipe their eyes, some dogs are more often then others. the groomer will tell you the produces that are best for that. and the groomer will clip some of the hairs so it will not cause clumping. then you can get the produce from your groomers to keep it from staining. but the little dogs are so close to the floor and outside that the dust really bother them. so let the groomer take care of the trimming.

This can be common for this breed and any whose eyes stick out. This could be "dry eye" or other situation which needs to be medicated. Yes, the eyes can get very incrusted. The groomer will know how to trim the eye area to help with this.

This is not the same as the tear stains. Please call your vet about this. He will probably prescribe the eye ointment needed. We see this a lot in Pekingnese and Shitzu. Once the eye area is trimmed proper it will be easier to use warm washrag to clean around eyes but still need the ointment.

I have Maltese dogs and I don't know for sure if the eye problem is the same or not. BUT, I found some great stuff. It is called Angel Eyes and you can purchase it at the pet store. You put it on their food. That is easier than holding them down to wash their eyes. They seem to like the taste too. It works and it works fast.

Once you have it under control by using it daily you can cut down on the dosage as a maintenance product. It is expensive but worth every penny.

get a rag and run it under warm water keep it compressed on the boogers. they will soften and then some will be able to come off with the rag. good luck
BTW i have seen a lot of othe lhaso opsos with this same problem. it may be a breed thing.

They are called Tear Stains. They have something in the pet store, that you can put on to clean his eyes off. I don't know what it's called, but just ask them. The groomer might even be able to recommend something.

Mine has too. the best is to clean the dog eyes with a tissue first thing every morning. Then they don't get so stuck. If in the hair wet a tissue and dab it a bit first.

My dog is so used to that, if I forget he gets it himself. With his paw. funny huh?

Well, my mini Schnauzer has the same problem, it builds up fast and it is discusting. You have to remove it every day before it builds up. Kleenex works.
