More details would be nice.
I use to have an invisible wall built that would make people think i couldn't be approached for any reason other than a work related reason. Even then people were hesitant. I had some issues that i was dealing with and didn't need the distraction.
Later on, i tore that invisible wall down, and began being more outgoing and friendly rather than the onery old cuss i'd been previously. I'm rather above average in size, work out and am really toned. 6'5" 255 lbs. size scares the hell out of alot of people.

He needs to focus on his good points rather than what he thinks are the bad ones. Maybe get some friends or something to give him a pep talk before he approaches a girl.
