I have a 10yr old Chocolate Labrador. She has Arthritis in her hips. I have been getting METACALM from the vet, but this is costing an absolute fortune! Please don't get me wrong, I adore her, and would pay the earth to make her better! But was wondering if anyone knew of any other remedies/alternatives, that are slightly cheaper! I am at present paying £20 per week.

There is a course of injections they you can get from the vet... 5 injections over 5 weeks, they are expensive but they last through out the cold weather. Saying that I am assuming your in the UK and the weather there is pretty cold (I used to live there til I moved to Aus) so tablet form is probably best..
Ask your vet for advise, dont just give your dog any old medication reccomended on here... We are not vets
Good luck

Try giving her a full adult dose of glucosamine daily. My cat has hip dysplasia (like big dogs get sometimes) he was only suppose to live until 8. He is now 14 and takes 1/2 adult dose a day. My other cat who is 13 is developing arthritis and I give her 1/4 adult dose. It is a lot less expensive than what you will get at the vet and probably just as effective.

I would take it to the vet first. We took him to the vet and he really didn't even look at the dog and diagnosed him with arthritis but after it kept get worse and worse, we got a second opinion and after just two minutes of watching my dog try to walk, the second vet said it was NOT arthritis but something wrong with his back.
We would have never known that without taking our dog to the vet. So I suggest to every one, see a vet - don't try and diagnose the dog yourself. And don't accept the first diagnosis if it doesn't satisfy your concerns. Good luck!

When I worked a vets office, he would recommend giving the dog osteo biflex (chondrotin and glucosemein) first. Every one he told this too said it seemed to really help. Give the dog 1 - 2 pills daily.

Rimadyl is very good for treating arthritis. And is cheaper than metacam. Ask your vet if they carry this, if not go to drsfosterandsmith.com and order it.
