Changing the name because YOU are not crazy about it is not a good enough reason to change it. If the dog was abused with that name you can change it, but that is the only reason. Changing the dogs name at 16 months is only going to confuse the dog more than has already happened with the new home.

l adopt a dog and did not like the name and l change it. l change it to something that almost sound like it but was way different and now it comes to that name l do not think it would come to me if l call it by the old name. but you can name it anything and it really does not matter. but it would take a little longer to get use too so that is why l choose to name it a prettier name that sound almost like it.

I should think that you would not cause the dog any harm or confusion. Try using both names together for a while, with her old name first and slowly phase out the first name. Say the name often and with happiness and reward her when she comes to you; especially when just using the new name.

We adopted our dog when she was around 18 months old. We didn't want to keep her old name, so we decided on a name that fit her and started calling her by that name. We also gave her treats when she came to that name. It didn't take very long before she had adopted her new name.

Yes you can change your dog's name. It may take a little while for the dog to understand that you are speaking to her, but as you train her, you're going to be saying her name before each command. As she hears it, it won't take long for her to understand that you're trying to get her attention.

I've adopted several dogs over the years, some with previous names and some without. I have always named my dogs with a name that meant something to me or described their personality when they were with me. You'll be surprise how quickly she'll pick it up.

Yes, many dogs do not recognize their names but rather the intonation in which it is said. For example, say "Rover" or whatever the dog's name is, then say "Bandaid" the same way you say the dog's name. Many will respond just the same. Not all dogs are like this. I have one that knows his name, but my others don't have that kind of name recognition. Have a dog gone great year.

It should not cause any problem to change the name. You dog will learn a new name easily if you always use his name in a positive way and never in a negative way. Use his new name often by calling him to you in a nice voice and offering some reward when he comes to you. He will soon learn.

When a stray is found no one knows what name it had before, so they give it a new name. It happens all the time. The dog will be confused at first but just repeat the name over and over and it will learn it.
