I found these files and when I open them it shows a command prompt box and then says C:\da.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0563:01dcd......(some code) Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. There are some other ones like this too. Should I delete them or keep them?

They could and You make sure that they are not.

You run a virus scanner and such programs as adware removers. You do not remove files without knowing what they are.
They might be needed by programs or OS.

The exe is at an unusual location. That is all. Service exes started
without param will abort in error also.

Malware sits in Autostart it has too because You ain't gonna start it, he he. So You can always search and shut down processes in autostart that You do not know and use. Unstarted nothing harms.

http://www.sysinternals.com // they have a lot of good free tools

Process Utilities "Autoruns" Shut down the programs in "logon"
that are not by Microsoft ( except Your firewall and Your anti virus software - which should be there also ). Inspect other sections for "funny" looking things - especially if they are not by Microsoft or Your hardware manufacturers they look "funny" in autostarts ;-).

A check what processes are running would not be wrong either.
Maybe use sysinternals ProcessExplorer. The program also helps to stop processes that look dubious to You.

p. s. You do not format because of a hard too tackle virus.
You create special rescue CD e.g. with Barts PE builder.
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ or Wikipedia for more info.
They start Windows from CD and have a virus scanner and other helper tools. Viruses on unstarted OS are helpless against that and You. Scanner CDs can be also based on Linux.

Best create such a disk well in advance . thx for reading my post

Can you right click and bring up your antivirus to check the files?
