I went to bootdisk.com and downloaded the 4-floppy disk images, in order to run a repair. It did not repair things. I ran both repair options. It gets to the blue startup screen, it then reboots before it says "Windows is starting up". Obviously it's something to do with the boot files. Without the win2k installation cd, is there ANY WAY to fix things?

not usually...did you check your hard drive to see if there is a directory named i386? that is where the installation files are kept.

Without the pro CD it is a bit more complicated, but there are some things that you can do. If you are using Internet Explorer 6, open control panel, add/remove programs. IE 6 will be in the installed program list, select it and select repair. I don't recommend using the "reset to original configuration", option just select repair. Again in control panel, select administrative tools. Open the event viewer. Look for errors that are reported each time you boot the system. They have event ID numbers and repair instructions can be found by searching google. Press at boot up and select the option to write a boot log on startup. This log file is pretty big but it reports either success or failure of everything that the system loads. It takes time to fix it this way, but if you willing to spend the time, the information on how to repair the system is easy to find.

It is possible to creat a Win2K boot disk but you need another machine with a suitable floppy drive if you are having to do it via the floppy drive. It can be done from a CD. There are a number of internet sources of the disk images some are free and some not. You will need to do some background reading. I know that bootdisk is one of the sources I used when doing something similar to a machine here.

try rebooting and hitting F8 key see if it will boot up in safe mode if it does then try to do a restore other than that it's a full restore from the CD...
