She is a 5 year old female beagle. She foams at the mouth, paces, drools and will not calm down while in the car, even for a short trip. I have had to sedate her if we are to be in the car for any length of time. She has always been a little hyper; she took her metal create apart, chewed the molding around the door and the edge of the carpet. What can I do, our other dog, a 4 month old male Corgi, is very 'laid-back". We thought that another dog might help to calm her down, but it hasn't affected her at all. We are at a loss as to what to try next, I would appreciate any help from anyone out there. Thanks! Reply to: lgkersey@frontiernet.net

I teach Puppy Socialization classes and on the 5th week I bring in a vet to talk to my students. One student did
ask the same question about her puppy getting sick during car rides.

It's a vicious cycle that is going on in your Beagle's brain. She's anxious about car rides and this makes her nausous. She's sick to her stomach and this makes her anxious.................

The vet would prescribe Baby Gravol (Dimenhydrinate)
http://www.healthandage.com/html/res/com/ConsDrugs/Dimenhydrinatecd.html
One of the chemicals in the drug shuts off the anxiety stimulated part of the brain and also calms the stomach.

Along with retraining her with positive reinforcement, she can learn to accept car rides and you might be able to wean her off of the drug.

I just answered a question for someone else yesterday on how to desensitize a dog to stop barking in the car. This same method would work for your girl as well.

Very bottom of my answer for car tolerence retraining.

Car sickness in dogs and learning to like car rides:

On the other hand, I would choose a holistic approach and you might want to try this too?

it can take work but if you bring the dog near the car (with the door shut) keep her near it as long as you can before she flips out and offer a treat. Try it as many times as you can trying to extend the time that you keep her by it. Once you can reach at least 20 minutes I would open the door and repeat the same thing as when the door was shut. Once that can be accomplished try placing her in the car with the door open. Then you can try it with the door shut. Its just a matter of trying to get her used to the idea of a car being okay. With some dogs it doesnt work but if your willing to take the time it might work and be worth the try

Poor dog is scared to death of the car... Dont take her in it unless you have to...

Its a shame cos lots of dogs love the car.. just not all of them

If you do take her in the car because you have to make sure someone is sat with her she knows and trusts who can re assure her the whole way of the journey

We used to have a border collie and she did that every time she got in the car. I told my husband that it looked like we had someone in the car that was fighting to get out. The glass was smeared where she would rub against the window. We didn't take her in the car very often. Just to the vet and such.
