I looked it up in the encyclopedia in 3rd grade. It said he was a mythological figure. I was a bit precocious, because I knew what mythological meant. It was a meaningful moment, though, because I remember the way the page looked and the black & white picture of Santa that illustrated the entry.
Religion took a little longer, quite frankly because I pretty much had to work my way out of it by myself. I was probably almost 30 when I finally decided there wasn't enough reason to believe any longer. However, since my family is so church focused, I've continued to attend when I visit.

OK so Santa is a myth, fine. I was about 6 when I figured it out. As far as Christianity though, I'd rather believe and live the way I do and in the end find out I was wrong because I really wouldn't have lost anything, I live a fine life. But if it is true and I don't believe I've lost everything.

My first plane ride killed religion for me. Up to that point I had believed in the existence of Care Bears, the Big Bang and angels quite fervently. My parents took me to Disney World, and when I looked out the plane window, much to my youthful surprise there was no city of heaven full of angels and dead relatives hidden above those clouds, and no kind old giant father-figure in sandals sitting on a throne. No Care Bears either; that really upset me more than the religion thing. I already suspected that the men in the brown suits on EWTN might know less than they said they did, but how could Nickelodeon and all its creations possibly be fictional?
I believed in Santa for a while after the airplane incident, until I staid up late one Christmas eve and caught my parents sneaking presents under the tree...
Years later, I started to wonder about religion again so I decided to read the Bible. This caused a conversion experience; I went from agnostic to atheist 1/4 of the way through and it went downhill from their. I have since read other great works, and have concluded that Buddhism is a better starting point on morality and the Greek myths are much better written than the old Judeo-Christian ones.

As a child I was raised in an atmosphere of learning and openness, so I've always known that Santa was a myth.
Likewise, I have always known that Christianity and Islam are realities. They are religions which are practiced by millions of people around the world. That is not mythological, that is a fact. Myths do not exist, but I'm sure you have seen churches and mosques? This means that they are not myths.

Since I was three years old and able to understand, I knew that God is my Savior. I have always been a Christian and nothing can be done to me, to change that. I will never consider my Faith or Christianity to be a myth. It is true. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be SAVED ! I truely believed in Santa until about the age of six. I hung up eight stockings (for all of us kids) and waited and waited for Santa to put something in them. No show. So that is when I figured it out, that Santa was not coming. God and Christianity IS NOT A MYTH. IT IS TRUE !!

I was around age 10 when my grandmother broke the news out to me. My kids don't believe in Santa because society tries to make it seem like he can grant you all wishes, that he knows who's "naughty" or not......only God knows everything. BTW, I find it interesting that Santa and Satan have the same letters.
