Haha....You might want to ask that question with a geographical specificness. Such as ask what the codes mean from around the area that you are from.

There are so many different meanings for the codes it is not funny. Different departments will use the same codes, but will have total different meanings. This is why FEMA is doing a big push to have fire, EMS, and law enforcement departments to do away with "department specific" codes. They want us all to start talking on what is called "clear text". Basically, saying what we mean instead of using codes. This is in the event of something major happening like the Hurricane Katrina disaster when there was a lot of departments coming from all over the country. You know how many different variations of the 10- series codes could have been being used down there? A lot.

Codes and signals are used by police departments across the country. Some small departments use a 10 code, which is what you will hear on a CB radio a lot. 10-4, etc.
Other departments will develop their own codes. For example, every sheriff's department in the state of Ohio (there are 88 of them) uses the same codes and signals. codes are made up of even numbers while signals are odd numbers.
Example, a code 2 is an accident and a code 4 is an accident with injury. A signal 7 is a resigtration check. You may be able to obtain a list of codes from many departments on the internet.

10-7: can also mean on scene/location
10-19: go back to station or go to (insert location here)
10-21: place phone call
10-100: bomb

I also got more codes based on the 10- system from previous jobs, but I'm not sure if police uses those so I'm not going to bother putting them down. These ones for sure they use.

I know that some codes vary from agency to agency. And I just heard on the nerws, they are trying(?) to change them where ALL agencies talk the same language. I have the codes somewhere in my notebook, but right now I can't get to it. I do know that (here) 10-50 is a car accident. I'd rather not say other than that one.

It really depends on where you are. Codes may mean different things to different entities. I can safely say that 10-4 means ok in alot of places. This is what some mean where I live. 10-1...radio breaking up, staticy. 10-2....loud and clear. 10-7...out of service. 10-8...in service. 10-9...repeat. 10-15...suspect in custody. 10-20...your location. 10-22....cancel. 10-23...onscene. 10-28...background check. 10-65...dead on scene. The fire dept I work for no longer uses ten codes because its easier if I say, "the house is on fire" rather than saying "we got a 10-99".
