We are looking at taking a 8 day Southern Caribbean cruise this coming March. Ports such as Aruba, Venezuela, St. Thomas, etc. I read that while at port, the ship shuts down everything including the pool. First of all, is this correct? If we chose to not get of at that certain stop, what would we do?
The particular ship is the Adventure of the Seas. Anyone every been on this ship and if so, what was your experience? Thank you!

I just returned TODAY from my 11th Royal Caribbean cruise. The pools do not shut down while in port. The onboard shops shut down as do the casinos, as required by law, but otherwise, many of the port stops are not worth getting off the ship to see. Some are filthy and some of the ships are destinations in themselves such as the Freedom of the Seas, or the Explorer of the Seas. I was just in St. Thomas on Wednesday and it has lots of nice shops, and Megans Bay is an excellent shore excursion. If you choose not to get off the ship you will not be bored. They are beautiful ships. Have fun!

I went on a Western Caribbean cruise and while in Belize we ended up going back to the ship because is was raining & gloomy and there was no way in heck we were going beyond the fence without some sort of excursion (wasn't much to do in port), and everything was still open and running.

Judging from the cruiselines website looks like you'll have plenty of activities on board......ice skating, rock climbing, in-line skating, full-size basketball courts, 9-hole miniature golf, golf simulators, casino, bars, lounges, restaurants, on board movie theater (screening room) that shows first run movies.

If you decided to book a shore excursion through the cruiseline you need to make sure that you do it as early as possible as they do sell out rather quickly. Also, be prepared they can get rather pricey. Also, if you want to schedule spa treatments, massages, etc., you should schedule those appointments early as well.

Here's a link so you can do a virtual tour of the ship you will be cruising on. It's pretty cool. http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/cruiseDetails/shipInformation.do;jsessionid=0000sY37lRgPLL271lFZY3Ubepe:10ktmf1jr?packageCode=AD7SCSJ3&shipCode=AD&sailDate=1070311&date=ANY&selectedCurrencyCode=USD

Have fun & enjoy!

I went on a Royal Carribean cruise in October on the Mariner of the Seas. When we went to port, the pool remained open - I think there were fewer activities going on. At one port it was pretty rainy, so we spent very little time off the port; we got massages! And the massages were actually cheaper the days at ports!

I have never heard of the pool being shut down. Many people do not leave the ship. There will not be any gambling and many organized activities are limited but there is still food and you can relax.

Be careful you don't get one of those diseases floating around cruise ships. It would probably be a lot safer to get off at port.
