This question, obviously, is supported by data gathered over many years, and scored using the agreed "Dumb answer" international scale, with full standard deviation at a 90% confidence level.

If chosen by the Asker, then it must coincide with their opinion. Dumb questions get dumb Best Answers. When chosen by the voters, they are too lazy to read the (sometimes) 50 answers given, so they pick from the first five.

Maddening, isn't it?

When they are selected by the asker, the asker will have a tendency to pick an answer that agrees with what the asker already believes to be true. Research in psychology, advertising and persuasion has shown that people tend to accept most readily that which correlates well with what they already believe. In essence, most people seek reassurance not the truth.

The same tendency of course exists in voters when the question is decided by voting.

The tendency for the answer to be one of the first five rests with the same tendency that makes it advantageous to be at the top of a ballot during an election. Research here shows us that the higher the name is in the column, the more likely it is to be picked. This works for left to right positioning as well, with preference to the left.

The perceived intelligence of the answer will in turn depend on your own predispositions and beliefs. Of course, you may choose to disregard all of this and just think of the people as stupid, that old reassurance thing again. ;-)

Given that 99% of all the answers that questions generate are dumb the odds of an intelligent answer being selected is very slim!

Because that person just waits till the answer comes up to be voted on and because no one takes the time to pick a best answer or vote for one that person just pickes theres and gets the ten points.

Yahoo Answers does not have the most accurate system for evaluating answers.

The voting is time limited, and many people don't come back to vote afterwards.

Also, people vote for their friend's answers.

Finally, we have some people who really don't know the answers voting on the best answer.

Because 9 times out of 10, the asker isnt asking a sincere question. They have already made up their mind what the answer is and pick the answer that agrees with them most as "best answer"
