I got one............... a cast iron one! I'm not a gourmet cook by any means, so I love it (it's red), and it suits my needs. Is this considered a good set? What kind should I have?

I do know how to care for cast iron as I grew up in the hills of PA, cooking with nothing but! Thanks for the tips! I'm enjoying hearing about the other types, too!

The best mortar and pestles, can cost up to $2000.00 and usually is made of the finest, marble, granite, or porcelain.

Although, you can buy a metal or plastic one for $20.00 - $50.00.

I personally have one that is white and made from marble. It was given as a gift and cost about $120.00.

Cast iron? Interesting. Mine is granite. I have seen other sites that sell the iron ones, so if you like it, keep it! They are pricey. One thing I don't like about cast iron....it must be kept seasoned, just like a cast iron pot or pan.

I have one from Mexico made of volcanic rock, along with a grinding board to mash and puree corn for masa, they come in metal, stone, rock, marble and wood.

I was a chef for many years and used one in alot of places, good for spices, pureeing peppers, guacomole, sauce like pesto. Just use it the way you like, try diferent things and don't be afraid to try as much as possible.

If the iron is not coated it may react with acidic ingredients and have a negative affect on flavor.

I thought they only came in marble and porcelin. As long as it does what you need it doesn't matter.I did look and found one that is cast iron.I also found some that are wood.
