I really need orthodontic braces. I have a severe overbite (buckteeth), a large deepbite (my bottom teeth are nearly biting into the roof of my mouth), a midline discrepancy (my bottom jaw is too far to the left), and the teeth are starting to rotate and turn others crookedly. My teeth look okay right now, but they won't in a very short time! As it is right now, I have trouble biting into things and I have a slight lisp when i say my "s's." My ortho wanted to start when i was 14 (last year) but my parent's wouldn't. I really want and need them, but they'll cost. BUT i know that we're getting a BIG income tax return (about 6000) and i really want &need braces so bad. How can i convince them?

oh and P.S.~~ if some of you saw my Q: **what colors should i get for my braces?** i wasn't trying to LIE i was planning ahead and failed to mention that. thanks guys.

THANK YOU SOO MUCH, EVERYONE. GOD BLESS, AND I HOPE YOU'LL GET THE BEST ANSWER!

I had braces when I was your age too. Luckily my parents saw the need and had no objections. They made all the difference in the world.
Hon, you sound like your need for braces goes beyond cosmetic appearances. It's really not good when at your young age, you're already having trouble biting into things. Now, I know that most orthodontists have payment plans, meaning your parents won't have to foot the bill for your braces all at once. Braces usually go on for a couple of years minimum, so that would be a good while to stretch the payments over.
Also, if you live in or near a college town, you can get braces that are steeply discounted by having them applied at a dental school. This will be done by dental students under supervision, and may be worth looking into.
Best of luck to you Sweetie...let us know how this turns out! :)

Why would you want a week in NJ? It's not a very popular tourist destination. A lot would depnd on where in NJ you'd be going, Paramus OK, Newark not so OK, even if you were 57.1 instead of 17.5. Not so much a matter of not trusting you then not trusting the world with you. Are you staying with friends or family? A minor will have difficulty getting a hotel room. I'd need more info to give a yes or no answer, but unless there are some red flags you didn't mention Yes would still be a possible answer.

Well, everything you just said is important and makes a good point. Also mention to them:
1. Your appearence and ability to speak properly will have an impact on how well you perform in the job market- the business world DOES care!
2. It is always better to have braces when you're younger and still growing/developing, than to do it as an adult and not have the opportunity to grow into your new tooth configuration.
3. Remind them that the cost of health care is rising at 8-12% per year, which is four times the rate of inflation... so the sooner they do it, the cheaper it will be.
4. Tell them you love them.

Otherwise, you might just have to wait till you have a job and can afford it yourself. I work for the State, and my dental insurance won't cover cosmetic items like braces, so it's safe to say you'll prolly never have insurance coverage that will pay for it.

To be blunt, your parents are selfish jerks. You obviously NEED the braces, not just getting them for a small correction for vanity reasons. If you have to find a dentist who will do a payment plan and arrange with your parents to allow you to get them if you get a part time job like babysitting or delivering the paper or whatever. Maybe they can pay half and you pay half. Not that i think that's fair to you but you HAVE TO get the braces any way you can. You don't want to wait like I did because you will onyl have worse problems as an adult. Do what you have to do and maybe get your dentist to talk to your parents again.

I am very concerned that given what you have listed here, your parents haven't done the least to even save up for this expense or paid monthly installments to fix your dental problem.

I suggest you let them know you are dealing with something here you no longer want to deal with. They can pay the orthodontist in monthly installments for the braces, my parents did that when my brother needed them. They aren't that expensive when you consider the problems they will be curtailing in years to come.

Personally, I would consider it neglect if parents have the money for a procedure that a child needs. How selfish of them if they don't consider your health.

Sweetheart,

If your parents are telling you no to braces, it's because they cannot afford them. Without dental insurance, braces cost much more than $6,000 and more to keep up the maintenance for 2 years.

Your best bet is to wait until you get a job and your own dental insurance. Or better yet, go to college, and you can get them done free at the university's dental school.

Don't spend your parent's tax return...you don't know what bills they have to pay.

Without going too much into details, my parents refused to help me when I started needing implants (I was 16) because of some medications I just *have* to take.

If your parents value their bills more than your health, I would contact child protective services. Their behavior is not a parent's. Parents are supposed to love their children before themselves, let alone before their plasma tv!

Good luck!

That's terrible.
You need to get your dentist to talk to your parents and tell them that if treatment is not started soon, things will go downhill.
Braces hurt, but I got mine off last week.
It was AMAAZING.
